Way One: I can respond to Fox's use of the term 'baby mama' in reference to Michelle Obama calmly. Way Two: I can get really, really angry. I'm leaning toward Way Two.

Jam- Right. Now, Michelle did call Barack her baby daddy four years ago, but this usage was totally out of any sort of context. Fox wasn't even quoting anyone. It was just... there.

Yoj- When I saw this, I was HEATED.

YR- Thanks for you astute analysis, dear. (What's up? Haven't seen much of you lately!)

Stace- It is beyond absurd. But it is Fox. These things go together.

It didn't surprise me after E.D. Hill's "terrorist jist jab" comment.

But on the real I think it points to the need to diversify their newsrooms. If you had people of different colors, religions, sexual orientations in the newsroom I think you'd think again before being insensitive. Having been in plenty of crazy newsrooms it's about more than being p.c., it's about being fair. I hope someone gives a reality check to the network which says it speaks to the need to be "fair and balanced".

A few points:

Fox is a political action committee. Nothing that any of the buffoons who appear on FOX surprises me.

This is racist. Fox would never describe any white woman as a baby mama.

I wonder if the indignation expressed by "informed" blacks isn't subtle, insidious elitism. Is it that no woman is a baby mama, or is it that she isn't a baby mama?

CNel- I used to think diversifying newsrooms was the answer, but one of my most memorable journalism classes taught me that adding people of color to a newsroom doesn't change the news, it changes the individuals. It's what my prof called acculturation. I think supporting black newspapers is the only way to get things truly fair and balanced.

J/D- ?

LH- Elitism? Nah. I think even bourgie blacks use baby mama/baby daddy as an affectionate term. But Fox's usage was totally out of context, which was the reason for the outrage.
